Q-Roundup is a network of support making positive & educational comments on posts to head on hatred and bigotry seen on social media that target our LGBTQ+ community. It's difficult to feel like you're the only one standing up to hate, so this group exists to gather more voices to elevate, support and call out hate spread publicly. There is strength in numbers!
This Eastside specific Facebook message group lets folks share online groups/pages/profiles that have been subjected to hateful comments targeting the LGBTQ+ community so we can counter hate with positive support for our community. While it is not helpful to fight an individual making targeted comments, it is important to not let those comments go unchallenged. The point of Q Roundup is not necessarily to educate the willfully ignorant but to show compassion and support for silent spectators, making the hateful comments the abnormality.
Counter comments to hateful speech can include positive comments elevating the lived experience and insights of the LGBTQ+ community, and sharing facts, figures and articles surrounding relevant topics effecting these communities. This also looks like elevating the voices, experiences and needs of queer folks, in their own words.
Q Roundup is not about calling people names, throwing insults or trolling and harassing individuals. This group exists to respect, elevate and speak out in protection of those in the LGBTQ+ communities who are being targeted, and not a space for allys to explain queer issues to those who live reality as a LGBTQ+ person daily. Mistakes happen, and that is ok, own up to them. Some posts may be outside of our normal comfort zones, but that is where real change happens. Let's not let hateful rhetoric continue to dangerously and inaccurately target marginalized lives.
This group was inspired by White Nonsense Roundup who have the same mission, to support people of color and address our inherently racist society through calling out racist and harmful individuals.
